Multimedia

The multimedia teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in multimedia, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Most of my previous experience with technology applications has been in multimedia. I have developed an interesting and up-to-date class in multimedia for middle school students. By designing such a class and having the freedom and, at the same time, pressure, to keep it current, I believed I had become fairly knowledgeable about the topic. However, the subject of multimedia is so large now, compared to when I first began, it is difficult to maintain any sense comfort. I will never cease to be amazed at the great variety of alternatives out there.  During this session of TATC,  I was able to further investigate a new mix of software and hardware. I discovered the new digital camera that will shoot video and I tried Swish as a software alternative to Flash and LiveMotion. I also added a sound editing software as one of the important components.  I spent many hours experimenting with downloading video clips and  with compressing or changing  video formats. I returned for the first time to try video editing, and I added sound to Swish in the second animation. And, to bring it all together, I reviewed and discovered new ways of combining all the elements - animation, sound, video, and text - in web pages.

Title: New Ways to Climb the Family Tree

Course: Multimedia 103

Date Created: February 23, 2003

Source: Family pictures, downloaded pictures, captured video; my own experience and creativity

Media: Web page, PowerPoint, Swish Animation, Nikon View Video Editing, Anfy Applet.

Description:  Visual images were created in different forms to communicate a message concerning family history. The introduction is an applet animation that I created simulating the beginning of Star Wars. Old family pictures were scanned and edited to be of similar size and color - black and white. They were saved in jpg format for file size concerns. A slideshow of these images was created using PowerPoint. Vector graphics, most in the form of cartoons, were added for humor. The slideshow was published as a web page and linked to the project. A graphic of a tree was created with texture and color to match the theme of the web page. This graphic became the icon that tied the web page together. An animation was created that illustrated a poem about aging that was found on the Internet. A video was taken of the family farm. It was edited and compressed for insertion into the web page. A discussion was included which set a comparison of bitmapped and vector graphics in a readable chart.

Rationale: The development of a visual story required me to demonstrate the use of several methods of graphical manipulation. These methods include scanning and editing photographs, creation of an animation with text and graphics, creation of a slideshow including downloaded vector graphics, and the creation and editing of video. In this project, I also demonstrated the development of these items in a way so they might be inserted into a web page for presentation.

Implications for future: Each method provides its own channel of communication. Either alone, or all together, one might present information to a class or audience in ways that hold the attention of those present. When used together, all the means of learning are addressed. Students who learn all of these will be able to manipulate several media in one presentation and better prepare for jobs in the future.

Reviewers Comments: Great job! Your hard work and many hours certainly paid off, this is terrific.

Title: Dances With Wolves

Course: Multimedia 103

Date Created: March 2003

Source: Internet and my own knowledge and creativity

Media: Web Page; Swish Animation; Downloads of video, music, and sound bytes from the Internet; Sound edited with Sound Companion; Storyboard written in Microsoft Word and translated into Adobe Acrobat PDF.

Description: The project was designed with a specific audience in mind. The intent was to structure a presentation in such a manner that the audience would be not only informed about the product, but also, perhaps, develop an interest in the movie selection. Selecting "Dances With Wolves", I created an opening animation similar to a movie trailer. I targeted the audience with statements about the movie that presumed a certain level of experience and maturity. I downloaded two sounds: one, the theme song for the movie; and two, a Native American drum song. I edited the two together to achieve a new, more haunting version of the theme song. I then inserted the song into the animation for its final effect. The review of the movie was not complete until I included critics reviews, actual narrative sound clips from movie; and credited the cast and production crew. A storyboard and timeline were offered as elements to aid students in similar projects. Since there are difficulties in linking to a streaming video in the trailer, this might create a problem in review. I have tried several methods of acquiring the video. Upon initial submission, no one said they had difficulties viewing the trailer; however, when I checked it out at our Region XI service center, there were problems. I initially downloaded the entire page, making sure I had captured the link to the streaming video; however, Connie now tells me that the code sometimes changes and that I am seeing it here on my computer because it is accessing it on this computer, not on-line. I have tried deleting all cache items it might see, but it still sees it here when I try it out on the Internet and does not see it at Region XI. I have located two other versions and decided to put almost every trial on the page in the hopes that at least one will work. On the "Trailer" page, you may click on the title "Dances with Wolves" to access an additional page that I did; you may click on the "Link to the Extend Version" to access a .mov version, and you may click on the "MGM.COM" link to view one of the original versions in case the embedded version does not present itself. In all cases, one MUST see this trailer to appreciate to quality of the film and the expanse of its scope.

Rationale:  I selected this as my best work because it required me to pull together all skills of audio/visual communication. I had to demonstrate my ability to create a meaningful animation with background music that I created by editing pieces of music and sound effects together. I researched the information and downloaded a movie trailer video. I edited graphics and chose a layout and theme for the web page presentation. I located and downloaded sound bytes from the movie and captured the interest of my audience with pointed statements. And, all this said, it was a work that came from my heart. I sat at the computer with tears in my eyes as I worked on the sound and animation. This was an opportunity to revisit a movie that has great meaning in my life, and I am glad I had this chance.

Information is not only facts and figures. It may take many forms. Information may be in sound, in video, or in animation as well as in text. Communication takes place using all of our senses. Using multimedia as the means of attracting an audience will certainly address most avenues of conveying information. Students who learn to combine all these avenues will be more successful in whatever venture in which they are involved. This type of project directs the student to target a specific audience, to analyze a media product, and to stay true to the message and mood of the piece chosen

Implications for future:  I am excited about the many possibilities of a project similar to this. This could well fit into a film production class or a business media class as well as a multimedia class. Elements such as the sound editing and animation are easily adapted to any class or activity. I hope to adapt these skills and concepts for assignments in my classroom, but more so, I see the application of these skills by the students in their futures as they become involved in business or some of the many creative fields.

Reviewers Comments: "Beverly, I can tell you spent a lot of time on your movie. The leather-like texture of the page and feathers on the side are perfect choice for your movie selection.

The white type created a nice contrast that was easy to read. The gray on the trailer/credits page was a little hard to read- maybe just a touch darker.

After watching your movie, I feel like I need to re-watch Dances w/ Wolves."
