Multimedia

The multimedia teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, and Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in multimedia, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection:

In my reasons for wanting to teach Tech Aps in my introduction, I acknowledged a long-time desire to explore multimedia concepts. This course has been an excellent introduction to that discipline. I have made amazing progress in a short time period. Working with sound and with video has been an adventure. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a presentation that comes alive before you is priceless. The diversity of media available today will surely increase as technology continues to advance, so this is a field that will remain exciting.

As I have studied the five disciplines of Tech Aps included in TATC, I realize more and more how each supports the others. The design concepts learned for one applies in all, with minor adjustments for the physical strengths of each. No matter which of the five I might teach, experience with the others will strengthen my teaching. The power of integrating several types of media in communicating information is remarkable indeed.

My Family Photo Album is a good indication of my personal growth in multimedia concepts and techniques at this point in time. I am so much more comfortable with Flash, and I am much more proficient with editing photographs. I find I have real opinions beyond the specifications about creating a product, so that I am setting my own standards instead of just wondering what someone else expects. This album gave me a rare opportunity to work with materials that were my own. Only the video clips were downloaded from the web. The animation in the splash page was created with Flash MX.

Title: Family Photo Album

Course: TATC 103 Multimedia

Date Created: February, 2003

Source: Family photographs, video clips downloaded from the web, accumulated knowledge of multimedia skills and techniques, text references, software help files, consultation with my instructor, Rachel Newman

Media: Macromedia Flash MX, Fireworks MX, Dreamweaver MX and Adobe Photoshop Elements

Description: We were to create a photo album with an animated splash page that would give our TATC colleagues a view of our lives and interests outside of the professional realm.

  • Between 5-10 pictures that are a combination of vector and/or bitmapped graphics - as you are selecting, think which is better to use and what are the differences
  • Pictures edited in some aspect (optional). Let us know if you edit a picture
  • A title for the photo album
  • Your photo album created using presentation software (online presentation services not permitted)

We were required to present our album in a web page with the following elements:

  • Input a video into your final production, if you can find a video for your theme that would be great. You do not have to edit your video in anyway. We will simply put it on our page. You can either embed the video or link to it. If you link, place a thumbnail of the video for the link.
  • Summarize the following concerning the photo album:
  • Brief description of pictures
  • Summary of bitmapped and/or vector graphics
  • Place a link to or embed the presentation photo album. If you link, place a thumbnail of the presentation for the link
  • Credits Page/Section
  • Add any extra features that you think will enhance your web page such as animated bullets, java scripting, mouse tracers, etc. (optional)

I looked through lots of photos that I haven't seen in a long time to choose the ones I included, so there are lots of fond memories behind this project. I wish I had the time to include a sequence for summer activities as well as winter.

Rationale: I chose this artifact because it is a good demonstration of my technical growth in multimedia. I'm glad to say part the project was very easy for me, so I know I have gained facility. Other parts seemed to be obstacles to overcome, but from the struggle I have learned concepts that I will never forget, precisely because of the struggle. It helped me gain and exhibit a wide range of multimedia knowledge, and I like the result of my work.

Implications for future: Selection of subject matter to build a good presentation sequence is itself a good learning experience for students. Many school organizations make scrapbooks or photo albums to record their activities and accomplishments, and having students create an electronic version would be a good extension. In addition to offering opportunities for creativity, it could possibly help students gain recognition from their peers, promoting a better sense of participation and involvement. The accumulation of positive memories is an important part of building self esteem, and this kind of activity could help students take conscious account of "the good times". Evoking pleasant memories contributes to good mental health throughout our lives.

Reviewer's Comments: Your presentation was that and more! I can't believe that you included all of the required elements inside the presentation! Who would have thought of that?! This really stands out in my memory because of that. You did a great job and I love seeing the pictures of your family. What beautiful grandchildren you have!

Reviewer's Name: Diana Saenz - Thanks, Diana. It just seemed natural to itemize the editing techniques on the photos.

Reviewer's Comments: That was an awesome picture to open your album with. The sunlight on the snow was so pretty. I remember learning to ski when I was a teenager. It was a lot of fun but I could not believe all the toddlers who could out ski most of the grown ups.

Reviewer's Name: Debbie Birdsong - Thanks, Debbie, I'm glad my album made you recall fond memories of your own.

Reviewer's Comments: I really enjoyed your photo album. My favorite part was the picture
where you took your daughter's husband out and replaced him with a tree. It made me laugh out loud when it said, "Now you see him." "Now you don't." This illustrates your level of mastery. I also thought the timing of the the slideshow was nice. Not too fast and not too slow. And lastly, the background blue compliments your snow theme. Bravo!

Reviewer's Name: Courtney Morawski - Thanks, Courtney. I am always thrilled when someone says, "You made me laugh."

I have designated my movie tribute to First Encounters of the Third Kind as some of my best work because, as the culminating project for Multimedia, it demonstrates proficiency in a large majority of the TEKS for Multimedia and many of the TEKS for Web Design. This project took a lot of time for me because the research on the film-makers and on the software was time consuming, because the original audio software I evaluated for use was troublesome, and because it took me forever to figure out how to find and save files that were being streamed.. In spite of some snags along the way, I learned a lot, I enjoyed making the web site, and its quality is very satisfying to me.

Indicators: I, II, III, IV, V, 7.10, 7.26, 8.5, 8.7, 8.9, 8.10, 8.15, 8.16, 8.17, 8.20, 8.21, 8.32, 8.45, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5, 9.6, 9.7, 9.8, 9.9, 9.11, 9.12, 9.13, 9.14, 9.15, 9.16, 9.17, 9.18, 9.19, 9.20, 9.21, 9.23, 9.24, 9.25, 9.26, 9.27, 9.29, 9.34, 9.35, 9.37, 9.38, 9.39, 9.40, 9.41, 9.42, 9.43, 10.24, 10.30, 11.9, 11.12, 11.16, 11.17, 11.18, 11.19, 11.20, 11.21, 11.23, 11.24, 11.25, 11.26, 11.27, 11.28, 11.30, 11.35, 11.39

Title: A Tribute to Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Course: TATC 103 Multimedia

Date Created: March, 2003

Source: Audio and video files, still images and information from the web

Media: Dreamweaver MX, Tsunami and Cool Edit 2000 audio software, Photoshop Elements

Description: The emphasis of the project was to create a multimedia product to stimulate interest in a favorite movie and persuade a targeted audience to see it. Specifications included creating a storyboard and timeline to guide our progress, editing audio, and integrating audio and video into the information, which was to be persuasively presented. Summarizing our targeted audience, crediting information sources, using links to external sites, and crediting our own work were required. Criteria to be included were:

  • Set up a storyboard of the MM product and link it to the presentation
  • Timeline or sketch you're planning and link it to the presentation
  • Integrate your edited sound into your presentation referenced in above discussion
  • Integrate a videoclip into your presentation - Does not have to be self-created but can be a previously developed video clip from another source but it must be provided as an actual video clip and not a link to a clip off site
  • Link to a site that is related to your show
  • Make your content persuasive in nature
  • Give yourself credit in the presentation
  • Include credits to sites or graphics
  • Provide a written statement summarizing your target audience
  • HAVE FUN!

Rationale: Learning to edit audio files was the major concept new to me in this project. The audio package I was assigned to evaluate proved to be very user-unfriendly, so I completed the work on a friendlier application. In my Computer Science work, I have always demonstrated strength in manipulating files, so you can imagine how frustrated I was when I couldn't download any video clips. Everything in the movie industry seemed to be streamed with no link to download the file. I was so relieved when it finally occurred to me to look in the temporary internet files, and there they were! If something is way too difficult, back off and try to think of an easier solution. In spite of these two frustrations, I enjoyed creating the movie tribute, and I learned, learned, learned!

Implications for future: The diversity of abilities in my classroom will take its toll in video editing. This is one of the places where I think starting with peer collaboration as I teach how to use the software would be helpful. I can't get around to all of the questions on a timely basis. Having peers to collaborate with should ease the frustration. I believe a project this complex needs to be carefully broken into smaller projects that don't overwhelm some of the students. Once several of the subtasks are completed, integrating the parts into a major project is more manageable and satisfying. The sense of accomplishment gained by creating a complex project that integrates audio and video is invaluable to a student.

Reviewer's Comments: Your images as so beautiful in your multimedia project. I like your black background and the text color. Nice job!
