Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

Reflection:

This is one of the areas where I felt strong before entering the TATC program. Eight years of experience teaching AP Computer Science and several years as a Tech Trainer for teachers at Lamar High School account for that. However, finding ways to help students develop strength in these areas remains a challenge. I find a fairly wide diversity among my students both in ability and in matters of conscience. I hope that one day I will have the confidence that more of my students are taking what they are taught about ethical practices, the policies I am forcing them to adhere to in the classroom, and adopting them as their own personal standards outside the classroom.

My Teacher Resources for Web Development is a perfect artifact for Standard I because its links provide important resources for a teacher who would like to learn to publish information for his students on a web page. First, it informs teachers about ethical practices and legal ramifications of publishing teacher materials and classroom information on the web. Being able to make informed decisions, when choosing the content of their sites, will protect the teachers and their districts while opening an important line of communication with students and their families. Second, it offers a few suggestions for content. Third, it identifies training opportunities and resource personnel who can help. For the beginner, the site offers three "canned" web pages of varying complexity, where the teacher can simply edit existing text. Once he has control and is able to update information regularly, he can begin to personalize his site or build his own.

Title: Teacher Resources for Web Development

Course: TATC 202 Extended Web Authoring

Date Created: December, 2002

Source: Web resources for ethical practices, district and campus information for teacher resources, and my own ideas for content and design of "canned" pages

Media: Internet access, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Photoshop Elements

Description: I was to create a web site to offer a group of users in my school or district help in creating a web site or working with a web-site related subject. I created a rubric to evaluate this site in a related assignment. It is linked to this site for viewing.

Rationale: Creating a website that can be used by teachers who cannot or will not create their own has been one of my dreams for a long time. I feel strongly that online access to teaching materials is where we as a faculty need to be going with technology. Those who are afraid of the scrutiny need to take whatever steps are needed to overcome their fears. The information it gives families about their children's educational requirements, assignments, and testing schedules will be invaluable to them.

Implications for future: The groundwork is laid. A basic site is ready. The last step is to make it available to teachers, and have it put to use. This is my goal for next year as the LHS Tech Trainers offer Web Design training to our Lamar faculty. An alternative is ready for those who don't feel they can design a web page of their own, hopefully making it possible for virtually every teacher to have some kind of online classroom information available for their students.

Reviewer's Comments: Excellent job! Great design and well-thought out organization.
