My Professional Goals
For Personal Proficiency
- to earn certification in Technology
Applications
- to be proficient enough in using
the TA software and well grounded enough in course content to
guide my students effectively
- to maintain proficiency in new software
as it becomes available for use in my school district
- to stay abreast of new software development
and to discern which packages could be of significant value in
my classroom
- to maintain contact with colleagues
through professional organizations and conferences to learn early
of new developments and to share best practices in the teaching
field
Of my five teaching preparations this
year, I am ill at ease with the one that is new to me. While I am
well qualified in Computer Science, I am not proficient with the
software or with the artistic nature of the content in Multimedia.
I would not attempt to teach it without participating in the certification
process.
For Classroom Excellence
- to develop a project driven curriculum
that challenges students of varying interests and diverse strengths
so that each has a real sense of accomplishment throughout the
course
- to provide a class atmosphere where
students recognize our relationship as a partnership in their
education, where they feel supported and guided on a basis that
helps them improve their abilities to prioritize, set goals, study,
research, analyze, communicate, and solve problems
- to organize instructional materials
well enough to maintain a matrix to cross reference codes for
each major unit with standards to effectively balance the emphasis
on TEKS in our curriculum, so that none are severely neglected
- to continually re-evaluate my teaching
techniques seeking better, more interesting or inspiring ways
to impart knowledge to my students and to encourage them to raise
their personal expectations
I returned to the classroom from industry
because I missed the face to face teaching contact with students.
That is what I love, and that is where I want to be until I retire.
For Campus and District Excellence
- as a Tech Trainer for my campus,
to continue to bring a broad knowledge base, empathy for the "technologically
challenged", thoroughness, and clarity to the task as I teach
the skills my colleagues need to know
- to support our campus mentor teachers
who are commissioned to assist teachers with integrating technology
into their classrooms
- to assist teachers interested in
posting course outlines, lecture notes, and study materials on
the web. I feel that access to this information would provide
two important benefits, giving parents important confidence in
the quality of education at Lamar and making materials readily
available to students of varying motivational levels
- to encourage the district to post
the TEKS for each course on our web site, making parents aware
of requirements concerning important life skills that reach beyond
the content of the current textbook. Thinking that it is sufficient
for a student to simply "turn in required assignments" diminishes
the quality of the education the child should receive
For National Excellence
I want to continue to improve the quality
of AP Computer Science by participating in the AP reading and by teaching
workshops and summer institutes for AP teachers in Texas and in surrounding
states. This is especially important for the next couple of years
since the language of delivery for Computer Science changes to Java
in 2003-2004. These are responsibilities I have put on a back burner
for TATC, perhaps in error, because of the timing.
