Rubric for Teacher Resource Web Site Evaluation

Jane Abel

Some firm convictions reflected in my rubric:

  • The ability to award no credit is appropriate in some categories.
  • Some categories need to be weighted differently.
  • In some cases a specification is met or not, with no middle ground.
  • Independent investigation should be encouraged and rewarded.
  • Sites are visited for information, so the content should be weighted heavily.

  • Category 15 10 5 0
    Content:
    Purpose
The purpose of the site is clearly stated, and information in the site consistently supports its purpose. The purpose of the site is generally evident and the information in the site usually supports its purpose. The purpose of the site is rarely evident and / or the information in the site fails to support its purpose in many cases.
    Content:
    Presentation
The presentation of information is thorough, well expressed, engaging and thought provoking. The presentation of information is reasonably complete and clearly expressed in most cases. The presentation of material is significantly incomplete or its expression lacks significant clarity.
    Content:
    Information
    pertinent
The audience for which the information is intended is clearly stated, and the information presented is pertinent to the audience. The audience for which the information is intended is evident, and the information presented is generally, but not always pertinent to the audience. The audience for which the information is intended is not clear, or the information presented is often not pertinent to the audience.
    Content:
    Language usage
Writing is clear and concise, and errors in spelling, punctuation or grammar in the final version of the Web site are minimal. Improvement is needed in clarity, spelling, punctuation or grammar in the final version of the Web site. Writing is unclear or rambling, or significant lack of attention to appropriate spelling, punctuation or grammar is evident in the final version of the Web site.
Credibility Fair use guidelines are followed with clear, easy-to-locate and supporting materials are accurately cited. No material is included from Web sites that state that permission is required unless permission has been obtained. Knowledge of fair use guidelines is occasionally demonstrated, but fair use guidelines are sometimes not followed or supporting materials are not always cited. No material is included from Web sites stating that permission is required unless permission has been obtained.   No knowledge of fair use guidelines is demonstrated, or no supporting materials are cited, or material from Web sites stating that permission is required was used without permission.

    Layout:
    Organization

The organization of material makes it consistently easy to find and to follow. The organization of material sometimes makes it difficult to find or follow. No clear organization of material is evident or it is very difficult to follow.
    Layout:
    Professional Appearance
Styles chosen create a professional appearance for the site. Effort is evident, but improvement is needed to achieve a professional appearance for the site. The appearance of the site is significantly unprofessional.
    Layout:
    Design Principles
Site reflects consistency, proximity, repetitions, and contrast in Web design. Site reflects some knowledge of proximity, repetitions, and contrast in Web design. Site reflects no attention to proximity, repetitions, and contrast in Web design.
Navigation All links for navigation are clearly labeled, consistently placed, and functional. Multiple navigation schemes are used: global, internal, and breadcrumbs. No page depends on a browser's back button as its only meansof navigation. Most links for navigation are clearly labeled, consistently placed. and multiple navigation schemes are used, but the navigation schemes are not always user-friendly. Almost all links are functional. Navigation is obviously inadequate, or many links are not functional.
Mechanics   All images, links and bookmarks function appropriately. Most images, links and bookmarks function appropriately. Many images, links or bookmarks are non-function.
Specification: Location of style sheet   External style sheet is in the same folder with the rest of the site files.   External style sheet is not in the same folder with the rest of the site files or no style sheet was used.
Specification: Content of style sheet   External style sheet includes specifications for all referenced HTML elements. External style sheet does not include specifications for all referenced HTML elements. No style sheet was used.
Specification: Level of style usage   All consistent formatting is controlled by the style sheet, not by the HTML. Some consistent formatting is controlled by HTML, not by the style sheet. No style sheet was used.
Specification: Links to style sheet   Each page in the site is linked to the style sheet. Not every page in the site is linked to the style sheet. No style sheet was used.
Growth: Independent investigation Significant independent investigation of multiple new concepts is demonstrated in page development.   Independent investigation of at least one new concept is demonstrated in page development. No independent investigation of a new concept is demonstrated in page development.

Material for my rubric was drawn from several sites:
