I
analyzed the scene from Forrest Gump when Forrest returns to the bedside of
his dying mother. It begins with Forrest entering the bedroom. The camera
height appears to be lower. The screen direction is consistent as
Forrest moves closer to the bed. The action moves from left to right. During
the dialog, the camera switches from speaker to speaker with the camera, at
times, over the shoulder of Forrest. I counted five changes in the camera
angle.
I noticed evidence
of the rule of thirds. At no time, during the dialog between Forrest
and Mama were their faces in the center of the screen. However, toward the
end of the scene, the camera slowly zooms in on Forrest showing the emotion
building up.
This activity
was beneficial to me in that it has reminded me that eye level shots are not
the only way to capture an image.
